What can you do to improve the lives of people with mental illness?

  • If you know someone who has a mental illness, stay in contact with them. When someone you know becomes sick, send a card or call them the same way you would if they had any other type of illness. People with mental illness need your support, friendship and love more than ever. Tell them you’ll help if they need it. Insist they get medical treatment because it could save lives.
  • Support mental health advocacy groups and mental illness research organizations. These groups need volunteers and money. Mental health service organizations also need help from the public.
  • Become informed about mental illness and the issues that surround it like government funding. Let your representatives know that you want first class treatment for people with mental illness. Insist that insurance companies treat mental illness the same way they treat other illnesses.
  • Eliminate the stigma associated with mental illness. Speak up when others make unkind or incorrect remarks related to mental illness. Pay attention to the incorrect media images perpetuated by movies and television. If a media outlet engages in stereotypical coverage of people with mental illness, complain to the news director or someone in management.
